11 September was Sustainable House Day and we visited this Beach House in Fremantle, WA.
Sustainable House Day is an event of the Alternative Technology Association (ATA). The ATA is a not-for-profit organization that exists to enable, represent and inspire people to live sustainably in their homes and communities.
I find it a great way to actually go and have a look what different buildings people have created and hear their reasoning behind it.
This Beach House had northerly orientation, solar passive design (cross-ventilation, polished concrete floors, heavy insulation – even insulated garage door!, double glazed windows), energy efficient reversible ceiling fans, water wise native garden and they had even used low VOC paint.
These features should be normal building practice, not just an exception.
